Checkout Manager - New World Stratford

About the Role
As Checkout Manager, you will be accountable for the smooth, efficient, and customer-focused operation of our Checkout Department. You will lead, mentor, and inspire your team to deliver exceptional service while ensuring operational excellence, accuracy, and compliance across all checkout functions.
This is a hands-on leadership role where you will play an important part in creating a positive team culture, maintaining high standards, and ensuring our customers receive a friendly and efficient checkout experience every time.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a customer-focused checkout team that consistently delivers exceptional service.
- Ensure the efficient operation of all checkout functions, self-checkouts, Lotto, and customer service areas.
- Recruit, train, coach, and performance-manage team members.
- Create and maintain effective department rosters to ensure appropriate staffing levels at all times.
- Monitor and control department wage costs in line with store targets.
- Ensure all cash handling procedures are followed accurately and consistently.
- Manage customer enquiries, complaints, and feedback professionally and effectively.
- Maintain high standards of presentation, housekeeping, and health and safety across the department.
- Ensure checkout processes, policies, and procedures are consistently followed.
- Support the team during busy trading periods and lead by example on the checkout floor.
- Undertake Duty Manager responsibilities, including responsibility for the sale and supply of alcohol.
- Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives that enhance customer experience, efficiency, and team performance.
- Work collaboratively with the wider leadership team to achieve store goals and deliver an outstanding shopping experience.

What We're Looking For
- Proven leadership experience in a retail or customer service environment.
- Previous experience managing or supervising a checkout/front-end team is highly desirable.
- Strong people leadership skills, with the ability to motivate, coach, develop, and support team members.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Experience managing rosters and labour costs.
- A genuine commitment to providing exceptional customer service.
- Current Duty Manager's Certificate, or willingness to obtain one.
- A solid understanding of health and safety requirements.
- The ability to remain calm, organised, and make effective decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- A positive, proactive attitude and the ability to lead by example.
- A passion for creating a great customer experience and building a strong, motivated team.
