Checkout Supervisor


New World Waihi is seeking an experienced and motivated Checkout Supervisor to lead our front-end checkout operations. This is a key supervisory role responsible for ensuring efficient customer flow, high service standards, and a positive team environment. The successful applicant will support the Checkout Manager in the day-to-day management of the department and its people.

Job type – Full time

Duration - Permanent

Minimum guaranteed hours - 40 hours per week

Salary – $25 - $30

 Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the day-to-day operations of the checkout department, ensuring efficient customer flow, high service standards, and smooth front-end operations.
  • Lead, coach, and support a team of checkout operators by monitoring performance, providing training, mentoring new staff, and assisting with recruitment and onboarding.
  • Assist Checkout Manager to prepare staff rosters during peak trading periods.
  • Support the Checkout Manager by overseeing department operations in their absence, resolving operational issues, and maintaining compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Manage customer enquiries, complaints, refunds, exchanges, pricing discrepancies, and complex service issues while delivering positive customer outcomes.
  • Operate and supervise the Lotto counter, ensuring compliance with legal requirements, company procedures, and responsible gaming policies.
  • Maintain high standards of Health & Safety, Food Safety, security, merchandising, and cash control while promoting a positive team culture and excellent customer experience.

Minimum Requirements:

  • At least 1-year relevant experience in a retail supervisory or team leader role within a supermarket or high-volume retail environment.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising a checkout or front-end retail team, including rostering, training, and performance management.
  • Proven ability to manage complex customer service situations, including complaints, refunds, and pricing discrepancies, to a high standard.
  • Sound understanding of cash control, till balancing, and financial accountability in a retail environment.
  • Practical knowledge of Health & Safety and Food Safety obligations applicable to a supermarket environment.
  • Ability to work variable hours including weekends, public holidays, and shift work as required by the business.
